To
submit an article to the JCCHS, please follow these
guidelines. Examining back issues of the JCCHS would be
helpful.
-
Early direct contact with the editor before writing is encouraged.
-
Submit articles via email or flash drive, because they must be in
digital format.
-
Titles must tell what the article is about. No cutesy stuff. Titles
should be terse.
-
Your full name must be directly under your title. Always use the
same name for all your publications.
First name Middle name or initial “Nickname” Surname
Example: John M. “Jack” Jones
-
Use minimal formatting. DO NOT OVER FORMAT. No headers or footers.
No page numbers. No publisher-type applications, just simple word
processing.
Your article has to be typeset in the standard format of the JCCHS.
Removing your special formats is often difficult and always time
consuming.
-
Use endnotes. NO FOOTNOTES.
-
Audit trails. Make sure there is a clear connection between the
statement you are documenting and the citation (in the endnote) of
the document you are referencing.
Example: Statement = Chenango County was established in 1798 (3)
Endnote = 3. Smith, James H. History of
Chenango County … Syracuse, NY: D. Mason
& Co. 1880. Page 71.
-
Citations must have these five essential elements: Author/editor.
Title. Source/Publisher. Date. Pages.
-
Citations to online sources must have the full URL and the date on
which you accessed it. If you have not accessed it for over a year,
please try to access again to make sure it still exists.
-
The first paragraph of your article should tell the main message of
the article, its punchline.
-
The final paragraph should tell the message you want the readers to
remember.
-
Photos must be digitized and submitted separately from the text. Do
NOT embed them in the text. Embedded photos are apt to be split
onto two pages during typesetting.
-
Every photo must have a caption telling the subject and the date.
Refer to photos by number;
example = Photo 2.
- A
brief (1 or 2 sentences) biographical sketch is required for our
About the Authors section. Tell the readers how your background
relates to local history, so that they will appreciate where you are
coming from and why you are qualified to write about your subject.
Do not be modest; do not exaggerate; just tell the facts in the third
person.
-
Editors represent the readers. The main job of an editor is to
clarify communication. Authors are too close to their writings to be
confused. What is clear to an author, may be confusing to a reader.
-
If you have any questions, please ask.
